Connecting with Caregivers
Every Store To Door client is asked for an emergency contact when registering for our service. At this time, our records show daughters and sons account for about half of these contacts. For many of these adult children, our service makes a difference in their daily lives, allowing them more discretion for when and how they spend time with their parents.
Because the majority of these adult children are juggling their own families plus a full-time job along with the care of their parents in their lives, not being the only resource for groceries provides much-needed breathing room.
Beginning in early 2009, Store To Door began a deliberate effort to become more visible in the working lives of these adult children. Positioning ourselves as a community resource to working caregivers we contacted several area corporations asking to be included in their Employee Assistance Program (EAP) beneit options as part of caregiving resources. To date, we're pleased that Anderson Corporation, Ecolab and Cub Foods have helped us in this initiative. An employee learning of how Store To Door can help them better juggle their role as caregiver to an aging parent can relieve stress and improve the quality of work life for the employee.
In Minnesota, nearly 60 percent of caregivers are in the work force; promoting a service that can help "wrap around" the care a grown child is able and willing to provide is the way of the future. We're continuing to seek additional corporate connections in this effort; if your corporation provides EAP beneits , please contact Mary Jo Schifsky for more information about how we can intersect with the provider to become listed as a resource for you and your fellow employees.
